Uniquely positioned among the Czech Republic's premier orchestras, the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra calls the northeastern city of Ostrava home rather than Prague. Its official Czech designation remains Janáčkova Filharmonie Ostrava. Even with these regional roots, the ensemble has cultivated a pronounced westward focus since the end of Communist rule, regularly featuring contemporary Western scores and undertaking repeated American tours. A substantial discography includes the Naxos release Auber: Overtures, Vol. 7.

Established in 1954 under founding conductor Otakar Parik, the orchestra came under the direction of Ukrainian American Theodore Kuchar from 2005 to 2014, a period that further expanded its American connections. Heiko Mathias Förster then served as chief conductor between 2014 and 2019. Russian-born conductors followed, with Vassily Sinaisky leading from 2020 to 2024 and Daniel Raiskin, also Russian-born and partly based in Canada, commencing his tenure in 2026. Recognition beyond the Iron Curtain emerged early; the first international tour occurred in 1958, extending to Australia the next year and marking the ensemble as only the second Czech group to perform abroad. Additional journeys have reached Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and numerous European nations. Prior to Czechoslovakia's dissolution, several Centaur Records projects were completed in the United States, among them a 1992 album containing Dvořák's Slavonic Rhapsodies; Suite for a Large Orchestra.

Corporate backing from the ArcelorMittal steel concern has distinguished the orchestra within the former Eastern Bloc. Regular appearances occur throughout other Czech cities, while guest podiums have been occupied by figures such as Jiří Bělohlávek, Václav Neumann, Charles Mackerras, and Helmuth Rilling. The recorded output stands out for both volume and range; since the early 1990s, projects have appeared on Brilliant in the Netherlands, Denon Classics in Japan, the American labels Navona, Albany, and New World, and German imprints Oehms, CPO, and Berlin Classics. Under Anthony Armoré in 2018, the orchestra issued symphonic poems by Mark John McEncroe. Eight albums emerged in 2020 alone, among them a Navona Records version of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Activity continued unabated through the COVID-19 pandemic with both domestic and international repertoire. The 2024 schedule featured Vítězslava Kaprálová: The Completed Orchestral Works on CPO and the Naxos title Auber: Overtures, Vol. 7.
