London-based quintet JC Flowers came together in 2014, drawing inspiration from the Free Design, vintage power pop, and the Velvet Underground. Its lineup featured vocalist and guitarist Tim Garratt alongside vocalist Issie Spurgeon, who had previously handled keyboards for Novella, guitarist Noel Anderson, bassist and vocalist Edgar Smith, and drummer Seth Pimlott. Early on, the musicians captured initial ideas using an old four-track Tascam recorder. Their debut track, “Proletarieterette,” appeared in April 2015, followed by a first live performance in June. The strength of both the recording and the stage show quickly led to an ATP festival slot and a deal with the festival’s own label by year’s end. In May 2016 the band issued its debut album, Driving Excitement and the Pleasure of Ownership, which included a relaxed reading of the Iggy Pop and David Bowie classic “China Girl.”
