Folk singer Jennifer Berezan spent her childhood in Calgary, Alberta, picking up the guitar while still quite young. A teacher at the Catholic high school she attended there sparked her interest in Bob Dylan, which quickly expanded to include fellow Canadians Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Bruce Cockburn. After enrolling at the University of Calgary and earning a degree in religion, she grew active in feminist circles. She began to connect those social convictions with music that had once held only casual appeal, committing to performance in earnest once she relocated to Oakland, CA, during the mid-'80s. Recognition followed across the Bay Area, and in 1989 she issued her first album, In the Eye of the Storm, on the Edge of Wonder imprint she founded. Her next release, 1992's Borderlines, earned a nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Although that record came out on Flying Fish Records, she returned to Edge of Wonder the next year for Voices on the Wind, recorded in tandem with author Vicki Noble. In 1995 Berezan delivered her fourth album, She Carries Me.
