Biography
Sally Rogers ranks among those performers who have built comparable careers across the folk and children's music fields. A recipient of multiple honors, her clear alto voice together with her deft compositions have won affection from young listeners and their families across twenty years.
She was born and grew up in Michigan, where she began singing and playing guitar while in third grade. Following her graduation from the University of Michigan she established a reputation in folk circles, frequently collaborating on recordings with her husband Howie Bursen.
Her debut children's project, Peace by Peace, appeared in 1988 on Golden Records and gathered folk-styled material unified by a peace theme. The next year she moved to Round River Records, the label run by her friend Bill Harley, and issued Piggyback Planet, an ecology-themed collection. It contained several Malvina Reynolds songs such as "Hello Ladybug" and "What Have They Done to the Rain," alongside original pieces including "Over in the Endangered Meadow" and "What Did the Dinosaur Say?" The album earned a Parent's Choice Gold Award and secured Rogers a lasting place in children's music.
Her third children's album, What Can One Little Person Do?, came out in 1992 and captured several distinctions, among them another Parent's Choice Gold Award and recognition as Best Children's Album of the Year from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. The record highlighted socially aware material such as "Where Do the Animals Put All Their Trash," "P Is for Peace," and its title track.
She soon released the lullaby collection At Quiet O'Clock in 1993. Dedicated to her two young children, the album again received the highest NAIRD honor and presented distinctive pieces including "Kitty Alone" and "Ride Ride Ranke" delivered in her straightforward, engaging manner.
Rogers has toured extensively throughout the United States, often presenting both a children's show and an adult concert on a single day. She has also contributed to numerous initiatives, among them the Children's Music Network, as well as children's compilations such as I'm Gonna Let It Shine, A Child's Holiday, and Rainbow Sign.
