Biography
Jim Ward stands out as a vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose career centers on his tenure as frontman and lead guitarist of Sparta between 2002 and 2020, alongside his foundational work with the post-hardcore pioneers At the Drive-In from 1994 to 2001. In 2008 he launched the alternative country-rock outfit Sleepercar, and six years later he issued his debut solo album Daggers, a record that wove together threads drawn from every previous endeavor.
Born in El Paso, Ward helped establish At the Drive-In in 1994 alongside vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala. The lineup later stabilized as a quintet featuring guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López, and the group produced three full-length albums plus five EPs before disbanding in 2001; a 2017 reunion proceeded without Ward. Bixler-Zavala and Rodríguez-López subsequently formed the progressive rock collective Mars Volta, while Ward joined former At the Drive-In colleagues Paul Hinojos and Tony Hajjar to create Sparta. Blending hardcore intensity, art-punk abrasion, and contemporary rock polish, the new band delivered three studio albums before entering hiatus in 2008.
That same year brought West Texas, the first Sleepercar full-length, which reflected the influence of Gram Parsons, Wilco, and Bob Dylan. Sleepercar followed with the 2015 EP Breathe and Count. Sparta resumed activity in 2020, releasing the fourth album Trust the River. Ward’s own first solo LP, the stylistically wide-ranging Daggers, appeared the next year and featured contributions from Incubus bassist Ben Kenney and Thursday drummer Tucker Rule.
