Born in 1958 in New York City, Halperin entered the local jazz community during the 1970s. He trained under Lennie Tristano and, following Tristano’s passing, continued lessons with pianist and educator Sal Mosca. During the mid-1980s he joined saxophonist Warne Marsh’s quintet, which also featured pianist Barry Harris, bassist David Williams and drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath; the group documented its work on the 1986 album Back Home. After an extended recording hiatus, Halperin resurfaced in 1997 for the duo album Psalm with Mosca. The next year found him in Norway, where he collaborated with bassist Thomas Winther Andersen on Line Up. Recognition arrived only in the early 2000s once he began releasing material through Cadence Jazz Records and its Creative Improvised Music Projects imprint, finally earning the acclaim long due his efforts.

Halperin’s performances and compositions maintain a detached clarity, reveal unexpected structural detail and sustain quiet tension that requires close listening yet repays it. Although his time with Tristano remains audible, subsequent artistic growth and independence have guided him onto a personal route within contemporary jazz. Additional associates include alto saxophonist Richard Tabnik, bassists Sonny Dallas, Don Messina and Dominic Duval, and drummers John McKutcheon, Bill Chattin and Jay Rosen.
