Johann Sebastian Bach counted his uncle Johann Christoph among his most significant mentors, especially regarding organ technique. After undergoing the required examination in Eisenach, Johann Christoph secured the lifelong post of organist and harpsichordist for the town. Working alongside his cousin Johann Ambrosius, he benefited from the latter’s efforts in transcribing scores on his behalf. Acclaim for Johann Christoph centered primarily on his compositions, which routinely incorporated five separate voices in the organ pieces. His detailed documentation concerning the reconstruction of the instrument at St. George’s survives in full. Among his mature creations, “Sei getreu bis in den Tod” and “Der Mensch, vom Weibe gebore” stand out as the finest, exhibiting a livelier character than his prior efforts.
