Following studies at the California Institute of the Arts and Mills College under composers Robert Moran, James Tenney, and Robert Ashley, the musician co-established the League of Automatic Music Composers, recognized as the earliest computer-network ensemble, along with the Hub, a collective dedicated to computer-driven performance. Writings addressing computer music have also appeared in publication, while current duties encompass both faculty and staff appointments at Mills College’s Center for Contemporary Music. Created in 1970, Outdoor Memory functions as a computer-implemented listening apparatus that reacts to pitch elements present in surrounding sounds.
