John Lindberg, recognized as a reliable and empathetic bassist who also excels in solo settings, gained his greatest prominence through his contributions to the String Trio of New York. After pursuing musical studies in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he relocated to New York City during 1977. Throughout the closing years of the 1970s, he performed and documented sessions alongside Joseph Bowie and Bobo Shaw as part of the Human Arts Ensemble. From 1978 until 1985, Lindberg collaborated with Anthony Braxton, appearing in concerts across both European and American venues. In 1979, he helped establish the String Trio of New York, an affiliation he maintains to this day. During 1980, he joined forces with Jimmy Lyons and Sunny Murray in a trio format. Between 1980 and 1983, Lindberg resided and pursued his career in Paris, where he directed small groups, presented unaccompanied performances, and participated in an ensemble directed by Murray that included John Tchicai. As a bandleader, he has issued recordings on the Cecma, Black Saint, West Wind, ITM, and Sound Aspects imprints.
