Biography
A gifted and flamboyant trumpeter, Jonah Jones developed an approach in 1955 that turned him into a leading draw for the next ten years: delivering compact renditions of tuneful swing standards and Broadway numbers with a muted trumpet in a quartet format. Though the broader public outside jazz circles first took notice of Jones in the closing years of the 1950s, he had already established himself as an energetic and accomplished player for twenty years prior. His career began on a Mississippi riverboat during the 1920s. He worked as a freelancer across the Midwest, including a period alongside Horace Henderson, enjoyed a brief engagement with Jimmie Lunceford in 1931, completed an initial stretch with Stuff Smith from 1932 to 1934, and performed with both Lil Armstrong’s short-lived orchestra and the waning McKinney’s Cotton Pickers. Jones gained widespread recognition through his role in Stuff Smith’s Onyx Club band from 1936 to 1940, where he cut numerous dynamic solos. He performed with Benny Carter and Fletcher Henderson before emerging as a featured soloist in Cab Calloway’s organization from 1941 to 1952, remaining with the vocalist even after the ensemble shrank from big band to smaller group. Jones explored Dixieland material alongside Earl Hines from 1952 to 1953, traveled through Europe in 1954—including a standout recording session with Sidney Bechet—and assumed leadership of his quartet at the Embers in 1955, where his proven formula took hold. His shuffle treatment of “On the Street Where You Live” launched a string of hits, and he issued an extended run of popular LPs for Capitol between 1957 and 1963 before moving to Decca for several additional quartet albums from 1965 to 1967. Jonah Jones cut a strong session with Earl Hines for Chiaroscuro in 1972 and continued performing sporadically through the 1980s and early 1990s until his death on April 30, 2000, at the age of 91.
