Biography
Shorty Rogers earned notice as a capable middle-register trumpeter whose approach helped shape the cool-jazz aesthetic, yet his most lasting impact came through his arranging skills in both jazz settings and Hollywood film studios. Building on early work with Will Bradley and Red Norvo plus military service, he gained wide recognition in Woody Herman’s First and Second Herds (1945-1946 and 1947-1949). He later added swing feeling to the Stan Kenton Innovations Orchestra (1950-1951), relishing the chance to write for Maynard Ferguson’s upper-register excursions. Once that engagement ended, Rogers made his base in Los Angeles, where he directed his Giants—ranging in size from quintet to nonet to big band—on a string of strong West Coast jazz dates and supplied studio scores that helped embed jazz in motion pictures, especially those for The Wild One and The Man With the Golden Arm. After 1962 he confined himself almost wholly to television and film writing until mounting a jazz return in 1982. He then reassembled and led the Lighthouse All-Stars; although his own trumpet playing had lost some of its earlier edge, he stayed a valued figure in clubs and on recordings.
