Jonathan Jeremiah, born in London, draws inspiration from the classic songwriting of John Martyn, Scott Walker, and Serge Gainsbourg to create an authentic timeless sound that merges gritty acoustic R&B with folk-tinged soul. Raised in the capital by an Anglo-Indian father and an Irish Catholic mother, he launched his performing career at age 14 once his deep rich baritone voice had developed. A cross-country road trip through America prompted him to begin writing songs during stops along the way, and a subsequent piano gig at a New York bar solidified his resolve to enter the music industry upon returning to the U.K. Island Records signed him in 2009, after which he issued the debut EP What's a Guy Got to Do?, toured the U.K. in support of Rumer and the Pierces, and supplied vocals for "Good Riddance" on dance duo Aeroplane's second album, We Can't Fly. His self-produced debut LP, A Solitary Man, arrived in 2011, having been written and recorded with former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and the Roots' ?uestlove.
