Jorane

Jorane, born Johanne Pelletier in 1975, first gained recognition as one of the rare pop cellists—if not the sole example—who sings while bowing her instrument. Her debut album, Vent Fou, appeared in 1999 and paved the way for international performances across multiple continents. In 2001 she issued the follow-up 16mm, whose success prompted a live recording captured at the Montreal Spectrum during the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Two mini-albums arrived in 2004 as the paired project Evapore and The You and the Now, opening doors to collaborations with Daniel Lanois, whose guest vocals featured on Evapore, and Lisa Germano. Over the subsequent years she carried her distinctive sound to audiences in many countries while collecting assorted awards and nominations. The 2007 releases Vers à Soi and the Internet-based Canvas or Canvass preceded a Juno Award nomination in 2008.
