Sophie Hunger, a Zurich-based Swiss singer and songwriter equipped with an acoustic guitar along with an indie folk outlook, achieved a major breakthrough in her native country when her independently issued first studio album, Monday's Ghost, topped the charts in 2008 and drew widespread critical praise. Emilie Jeanne-Sophie Welti Hunger entered the world on March 31, 1983, in Berne, Switzerland, and passed segments of her childhood in England and Germany. She launched her recording path inside the group Fisher under the name Emilie Welti; that ensemble issued its sole album, Fisher, in 2005. Afterward she struck out alone as a singer and songwriter, adopting the stage identity Sophie Hunger. Her initial full-length solo release, the home-recorded Sketches on Sea from 2006, gradually built an underground following, aided by her compelling stage presence. That reputation secured a slot at the 2008 Montreux Jazz Festival and additional prominent bookings. Strong audience response together with enthusiastic reviews propelled her studio debut, Monday's Ghost—issued in October 2008 on the independent imprint Two Gentlemen and performed in both English and German—to enter the Swiss albums chart at number one. Universal Music acquired international rights for a 2009 reissue, after which Hunger traveled across Europe to promote the major-label edition.
