Biography
Nadine Shah channels an intense strain of art pop and rock as a singer and songwriter, her voice and especially her mystique routinely compared to a fusion of PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. Two EPs in 2012 first unveiled her brooding, atmospheric blend of midnight loner pop and torchy indie rock touched by jazz, before the full-length Love Your Dum and Mad arrived in 2013. Her ambitious third album, Holiday Destination, earned a Mercury Prize nomination in 2017. The more groove-oriented fifth album Filthy Underneath, issued in 2024, captured her navigating extraordinary upheaval with a defiant stance.
Nadine Petra Katarina Shah was born in Whitburn, South Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, to parents of Pakistani and Norwegian heritage. As a young person she absorbed jazz and pop alongside the Sufi religious songs her father brought into the household. After releasing several evocative singles and a pair of EPs, she issued her debut long-player Love Your Dum and Mad in 2013, produced by Ben Hillier, whose credits include Blur, the Horrors, and Depeche Mode. Hillier returned for Fast Food in 2015, an album that probed the passionate and shadowed dimensions of relationships. On her third studio album Holiday Destination, released in 2017, Shah explored her identity and heritage against the backdrop of rising global nationalism. The record received a Mercury Prize nomination in 2018 and generated interest from major labels.
Her fourth album Kitchen Sink appeared in June 2020 on Infectious Music/BMG. Again produced by Hillier, it sustained her signature social commentary while employing crisp arrangements that, consistent with the title, spanned a broad array of styles. Hillier once more handled production on the next album, on which Shah confronted an unprecedented stretch of turbulence. She did so with a resilient, conquering outlook on Filthy Underneath, released in February 2024, marking her debut for the newly established regional subsidiary EMI North.
