Biography
Joy Zipper consists of Vinny Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale, who function as both songwriting collaborators and real-life partners. The pair hails from Long Island, NY, where each had already begun shaping individual musical approaches well before reaching adulthood. Cafiso, active in multiple bands from the age of 12 onward, first encountered his future partner at a local band competition featuring his group. Tindale soon took on management duties for his My Bloody Valentine spoof ensemble, a role that ended when their youthful romance prompted the band’s dissolution. Securing a contract with a U.K. label quickly prompted comparisons that positioned Cafiso and Tindale as the latest indie-rock duo in the vein of Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon. Immersed in London’s electronic-music scene throughout the late 1990s, Joy Zipper cultivated working ties with Andrew Weatherall, Skylab, Geneva, and Cornershop’s Tjinder Singh. The resulting sound appeared on the duo’s self-titled album, released by Bar-None in fall 2000.
