JPT Scare Band

In an era before online platforms granted instant exposure to aspiring musicians, countless acts honed their craft in relative isolation for extended periods, often without any prospect of commercial recognition or label interest. One such act was Kansas City's JPT Scare Band, assembled in 1973 by vocalist/guitarist Terry Swope, bassist Paul Grigsby, and drummer Jeff Littrell—three friends united by a shared passion for prolonged improvisational sessions rooted in the psychedelic hard rock style of Cream, Blue Cheer, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The trio soon recognized the distinctive chemistry in their playing and committed their strongest performances to tape, yet the group—whose name combined the members' initials with a nod to the intense duration of their acid rock explorations—never progressed beyond local basement rehearsals toward broader success. Their reel-to-reel documents remained so little known and narrowly distributed that the band might have faded entirely from memory if not for the efforts of two researchers at Monster Records, who located the musicians in the early '90s and compiled key 1970s material onto the limited-edition vinyl releases Acid Acetate Excursion and Rape of Titan's Sirens, with a subsequent CD edition appearing as 2000's Sleeping Sickness. These collections earned strong critical praise and found an enthusiastic audience among collectors of 1970s hard rock, but when the still-active JPT Scare Band members—longtime friends who continued jamming—requested that Monster issue some of their newer recordings, the label declined; its subsequent closure prompted the veterans to handle distribution themselves. Establishing the Kung Bomar imprint and an accompanying website, the band released the 2002 anthology Past Is Prologue, which blended archival and contemporary tracks, before issuing the fully new albums Echoes of the Everland in 2006 and Jamm Vapour in 2007, with additional unreleased 1970s material slated for future presentation.
