Kansas City's Julian Vaughn stands out as a skilled and deeply expressive bassist whose work fuses gospel elements with smooth jazz and instrumental R&B. As the grandson and son of preachers, he first encountered music through his church band. He began on drums before shifting his focus to bass, and at 19 he was already teaching himself the art of improvisation. Drawing inspiration from Wayman Tisdale and Marcus Miller, he soon attracted attention from fellow local players. Live performances came next, leading to his first independent album, Behind the Scenes, in 2006. Three years afterward he issued his second independent project, The Purpose Project, which included contributions from bassist Mel Brown and saxophonist Darren Rahn. The same pair appeared on his third studio album, Breakthrough, released in 2012 by Trippin 'N' Rhythm Records. In 2015 Vaughn offered his fourth album and second for Trippin 'N' Rhythm Records, Limitless, which showcased saxophonists Rahn and Elan Trotman, flutist Althea Rene, and additional guests. The studio release Bona Fide arrived in 2017, again featuring saxophonist Steve Cole along with keyboardist Nicholas Cole and trumpeter Lin Rountree. Two years later he unveiled his sixth LP, the silky and melodic Supreme.
