Norwegian composer and producer John Erik Kaada teams up with Mike Patton—frontman of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and Fantômas—in the Kaada/Patton project. The pair, two of experimental music’s most prolific and unpredictable figures, blend their shared passion for cinema and sound into a wholly distinctive result. Their debut, the largely orchestral 2004 album Romances, finds Kaada constructing sweeping sonic landscapes that Patton traverses with his remarkably flexible voice, taking cues from classical composers Gustav Mahler, Franz Liszt, and Johannes Brahms. A live album and DVD documenting the duo’s 2005 appearance at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival arrived in 2007, while their second studio effort, 2016’s Bacteria Cult, ventured into darker and more menacing territory without abandoning the seductive, cinematic atmosphere of the first record.
