Biography
Kara Jackson, based in Chicago, shapes refined acoustic compositions marked by perceptive depth and striking visual detail, moving well beyond conventional folk traditions. Although she first gained recognition through poetry, highlighted by her appointment as U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, she built a parallel path as a singer and songwriter that began with a 2019 EP and continued with the 2023 release of her debut album, Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?
She spent her formative years in Oak Park, a Chicago suburb, and completed the respected poetry curriculum at Oak Park River Forest High School before receiving the National Youth Poet Laureate designation in 2019. In that same year she issued the chapbook Bloodstone Cowboy and introduced her music with the EP A Song for Every Chamber of the Heart. Her singular guitar technique and deep, textured voice allow each song to merge raw openness, mordant humor, vivid narrative, and precise linguistic control.
For the album-length project she enlisted fellow Chicago musicians Sen Morimoto, Nnamdï, and Kaina to share production duties. Issued in 2023, Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love? stands as a meticulously assembled collection defined by inventive melodic lines, sharply observed detail, and restrained yet resonant instrumental settings.
