While awards have recognized Katey Sagal for her performances across the extended runs of Married...with Children, Futurama, and Sons of Anarchy, her accomplishments also encompass singing and songwriting through collaborations with several iconic figures. Catherine Louise Sagal entered the world in Hollywood, California, on January 15, 1954; her father, noted TV and movie director Boris Sagal, and her mother, writer and producer Sara Zwilling, provided the family backdrop. An early passion for music took hold when she began singing at age five, and the Beatles' arrival in America during 1964 sealed her enthusiasm, with surviving newsreel footage capturing the young Sagal amid crowds of screaming fans outside the Fab Four's hotel on one of their initial U.S. visits. Another rock & roll idol crossed her path in 1965 after her father directed the Elvis Presley film Girl Happy and arranged an introduction between his daughter and the star.

Piano and guitar skills arrived by the time Sagal turned 15, yet a few years afterward acting entered the picture at her father's urging through supporting parts in the TV movie The Failing of Raymond, which he directed, along with episodes of Columbo and The Bold Ones. Music claimed priority over acting by the mid-'70s, leading to backing vocal duties for Tanya Tucker, Etta James, and Olivia Newton-John, plus membership in the short-lived vocal group the Group with No Name that issued a single Casablanca Records album in 1976. During a Howard Stern interview Sagal recounted how a brief relationship with Kiss member Gene Simmons aided the combo in securing its contract. Bob Dylan enlisted her as a backing vocalist in 1978, though dismissal occurred before the tour commenced, and a 2013 conversation revealed that intimidation prevented her from speaking in Dylan's presence. Better fortune followed later that year with a role among Bette Midler's backing vocalists, the Staggering Harlettes; a full year on the road ensued, followed by a return engagement spanning 1982-1983.

A 1985 Los Angeles staging of the rock opera The Beautiful Lady drew the attention of a casting agent, resulting in Sagal's placement in the short-lived situation comedy Mary alongside Mary Tyler Moore. That 13-episode run nonetheless opened the door to the long-running part of the dysfunctional yet alluring housewife Peg Bundy on Married...with Children, cementing her reputation as a skilled comic performer over a decade. The visibility also revived her musical pursuits, prompting club performances and the 1994 Virgin Records release Well..., on which she co-wrote nine of the twelve tracks. Post-1997 television work filled her schedule with guest spots ranging from That '70s Show to Boston Legal, complemented by voice contributions to multiple animated programs, most prominently as the curvaceous yet formidable purple-haired cyclops Leela on Futurama. Another notable sitcom opportunity arrived in 2002 when she co-starred with John Ritter on the family-oriented 8 Simple Rules; Ritter's sudden death early in the second season prompted a reorientation of the series around Sagal as its central figure.

Downtime from 8 Simple Rules permitted the 2004 recording of Room, a Valley Entertainment collection blending covers and originals. Dramatic depth arrived with the 2008 casting as Gemma Teller Morrow, the matriarch of an outlaw biker gang, on Sons of Anarchy. Musical opportunities arose as well, with at least one vocal contribution per season to the program's soundtrack and appearances on the 2011 and 2012 soundtrack albums. A return to the studio in 2013 produced Covered, her third album issued by eOne Entertainment, featuring interpretations of songs by favored songwriters.
