Biography
Katie Mahan, a pianist from the United States, makes her home in Salzburg, Austria, and has developed much of her professional activity throughout German-speaking countries. Her programs cover extensive repertory, with special emphasis on the works of Gershwin and Debussy.
She entered the world in Golden, Colorado, among Denver’s Front Range suburbs, during the early 1980s. Her father Harv pursued research as a solar physicist, while her mother Bobette instructed piano students and supplied Katie’s earliest lessons. Although initially hesitant, Mahan took up the instrument at age four after attending a recital by Katia & Marielle Labèque. She delivered her first public recital at six and performed Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F at the Breckenridge Music Festival in 1999. At the University of Colorado College of Music she worked with Howard Waltz and other teachers, completing her studies with highest honors. Additional training came from Pascal Rogé, centered on French Impressionist literature, and she participated in master classes given by Lang Lang, Simon Trpceski, and Michel Béroff.
Among the halls in which she has appeared are the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, and Smetana Hall in Prague. Concerto engagements have included performances with the Wiener Residenz Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonia, and the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra. She moved to Salzburg after telling an interviewer, “I always dreamed someday to live in this beautiful city where Mozart lived and breathed!,” and has since maintained a schedule of engagements on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 2019 Steinway & Sons signed Mahan to its roster and issued the album Classical Gershwin; the following year she released Beethoven: Appassionata. She established and directs the Katie Mahan Foundation, whose slogan “Music for a Bright Tomorrow” frames a program of concerts and events intended to advance classical music while fostering charitable support for educational, medical, environmental, and other humanitarian initiatives throughout the United States and abroad.
