Biography
Marc-André Hamelin frequently gives the impression of possessing more than the standard ten fingers, much as the great keyboard masters of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—Sigismund Thalberg, Franz Liszt, Leopold Godowsky, and Ignace Jan Paderewski—once did. His command of technically punishing scores, rendered with apparent ease and yet never lacking expressive depth, prompted Harold Schoenberg of The New York Times to dub him a “super-virtuoso.”
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on September 5, 1961, Hamelin trained first at the Vincent d'Indy School of Music under Yvonne Hubert, herself a pupil of Cortot, before earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Temple University, where his teachers were Russell Sherman and Harvey Weeden. A decisive career launch came in 1985 when he captured first prize at the Carnegie Hall International American Music Competition. Since that victory he has presented recitals across the globe, frequently devising programs built around a single theme, while his concerto engagements have taken him to leading halls throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Chamber-music partnerships have also formed a regular part of his schedule, including collaborations with Jon Kimura Parker, Angela Hewitt, Midori, and the Takács Quartet.
Early releases on the Altarus, New World, and Music & Arts labels explored music by Wolpe, Ives, Godowsky, and additional composers. An exclusive contract with Hyperion followed, and the steady stream of recordings—encompassing concertos and solo works by Alkan, Busoni, Medtner, Grainger, and many others—quickly elevated his profile. These discs have earned seven Juno Awards along with the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Prize from the German Record Critic’s Association. Although Haydn’s sonatas might appear comparatively restrained within his chosen repertoire, the 2007 Hyperion volume devoted to them became the label’s top seller that year. The 2010 release of his own Études, a project that drew him still nearer to the legacies of Liszt and Godowsky, brought a ninth Grammy nomination (out of eleven) and another first prize from the German Record Critic’s Association. In 2019 he joined the Takács Quartet for a Hyperion recording of Ernö Dohnányi’s chamber music. Two years later he gave the premiere of Michael Gandolfi’s Piano Concerto with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under Robert Spano, the work having been commissioned to mark Spano’s tenure with the ensemble. In 2022 Hamelin issued recordings of C.P.E. Bach’s sonatas and rondos together with the complete rags of Willam Bolcom.
He holds the titles of Officer of the Order of Canada, Chevalier de l’Ordre du Québec, and member of the Royal Society of Canada.
