Biography
Among the foremost Hungarian pianists who came of age in the decades after World War II, alongside Zoltán Kocsis, Dezso Ránki, and Jenö Jandó, András Schiff occupies a singular position. His global profile surpasses the others in the cohort, owing both to his decision to establish his career beyond Hungary’s borders and to the refined subtlety of his touch together with his vigorous yet transparent handling of contrapuntal lines.
Schiff entered the world in Budapest on 21 December 1953. His teachers included composers Pál Kadosa and Ferenc Rados, the latter of whom he credited with an education rooted in an overwhelmingly critical attitude, as well as harpsichordist George Malcolm. At nineteen he gave his first Budapest recital and soon afterward began appearing across Europe and the United States, even while Iron Curtain restrictions remained in force. First prizes at the 1974 Moscow competition and the 1975 Leeds Festival followed quickly. A decisive early influence was violinist and conductor Sándor Végh; together they recorded Mozart’s complete piano concertos and an extensive body of violin-and-piano chamber works. In 1989 Schiff inaugurated his own Mondsee Musiktage festival near Salzburg, the city where he had first met Végh. Nine years later he assembled the ensemble Cappella Andrea Barca, which under his direction committed the full cycle of Mozart piano concertos to disc.
Schiff’s combination of rhythmic vitality and contrapuntal lucidity has established him as a leading Bach interpreter; his recordings encompass the composer’s entire keyboard output. He later set down the complete Beethoven sonatas for the ECM label, finishing the project in 2009. Extensive surveys of Schubert and Schumann also figure in his discography; in 2011 the city of Zwickau, Germany, honored his Schumann readings with a special prize. Works by Béla Bartók and Leoš Janáček likewise occupy a central place in his programs. Schiff departed Hungary in 1979 and has since voiced uncompromising criticism of political developments there, declaring he would never return on account of personal safety concerns. For comparable political reasons he relinquished the Austrian citizenship he had acquired in 1987 and now holds British nationality.
During the 2000s he frequently returned to Bach repertory he had already documented. He has accepted several high-profile residencies, serving as Artist-in-Residence at the Kunstfest Weimar from 2004 to 2007, as Pianist-in-Residence with the Berlin Philharmonic in the 2007–2008 season, and as a Perspectives Artist at Carnegie Hall during 2011–2012. Married to violinist Yuuko Shiokawa, Schiff has recorded violin-and-piano literature with her for ECM. Beyond that label his catalogue appears on Decca, London, Teldec, and additional imprints. Despite earlier reservations about historically informed performance, in the 2010s he began playing and recording on the fortepiano, favoring an 1820 Viennese instrument by the comparatively little-known maker Franz Brodmann. On that instrument he issued an album of Schubert Impromptus together with the Piano Sonata in C minor, D. 958, in 2019. Further ECM releases followed: Brahms piano concertos in 2021 and J.S. Bach: Clavichord in 2023. By then his recorded output exceeded 150 titles.
