Biography
Glenn Gould, widely regarded as the leading Canadian classical pianist of the twentieth century, endures as one of the most compelling and revered presences across the entire musical landscape—an embodiment of layered mystery that defies easy categorization. Though he emerged as a youthful virtuoso whose keyboard command knew few equals, public attention often fastened more on his reputation as an eccentric loner; observers noted his habit of donning a heavy wool overcoat amid midsummer heat, while onstage he perched on a lowered seat, hunched above the keys, vocalizing audibly—sometimes outright singing—while his free hand traced conducting motions. So intense were scholarly arguments over his unorthodox technique and mannerisms that his genuine prowess occasionally seemed overshadowed; little wonder, then, that at thirty-one he abandoned concert appearances altogether, redirecting his focus toward broadcasting, authorship, and an intense engagement with contemporary studio techniques.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, on September 25, 1932, into a household steeped in music—his father played violin as an amateur, his mother performed on both piano and organ, and Edvard Grieg counted among his distant relatives—Gould displayed extraordinary aptitude by age three, boasting absolute pitch and the ability to read staff notation, then composing his own works at five. He enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto at ten, capturing the piano prize at the 1944 Kiwanis Music Festival, the sole competition he ever joined owing to his firm resistance to performance judged by rivalry. Passing his associateship examination as a soloist in 1945, he also gave his initial public organ recital that year, prompting a review headlined “Boy, Age 12, Shows Genius as Organist.”
At fourteen Gould appeared as soloist with the Royal Conservatory orchestra in Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. His first full recital arrived in 1947, presenting music by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt; a network broadcast over CBC in 1950 followed, inaugurating his enduring ties to radio and recording. Early in 1955 he debuted in New York and promptly signed with Columbia’s Masterworks division. The resulting album of Bach’s Goldberg Variations achieved immediate commercial success, launching a catalog that would exceed sixty further releases for the label. Touring Europe in 1957, he became the first North American pianist to perform in the Soviet Union amid Cold War strains. Though his concert schedule thrived through the early sixties, he played his last public engagement on April 10, 1964, in Los Angeles, offering no prior notice or ceremony.
His withdrawal from the stage stemmed partly from a wish to devote greater attention to writing, radio production, composition, and conducting. One ambitious early undertaking was the sound documentary The Idea of North, a reflective examination of northern life. Relying chiefly on telephone contact with the wider world, Gould frequently withdrew from view for extended intervals, yet in 1981 he set aside his longstanding refusal to revisit earlier repertoire, re-recording the Goldberg Variations to exploit the technological strides of the intervening decades. Shortly afterward he assembled a Toronto chamber ensemble, directing their account of Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll—his final major project. Gould died on October 4, 1982, at age fifty, following a stroke.
