Biography
Among the most mysterious figures in twentieth-century music, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli combined rare artistry with an almost total withdrawal from public view, becoming one of his era’s most magnetic yet seldom-audible pianists. He earned equal renown for the recitals he canceled and for the limited portion of his extensive repertoire that ever reached recordings.
Born on January 5, 1920, in Orzinuovi, Italy, Michelangeli received his earliest encouragement from a father who was a devoted amateur musician. After beginning with violin lessons, the boy turned to the piano and entered the Milan Conservatory at the age of ten.
His professional path opened decisively in 1939 when he captured first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva. Witnessing that victory, Alfred Cortot declared, “A new Liszt is born!” Military service in the Italian Air Force during World War II halted his progress; once the conflict ended, however, he swiftly reclaimed a position among the foremost pianists of the time.
In 1960 he played Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto in Vatican City before the Pope. A celebrated 1964 recital in Moscow left the audience in audible tumult, and the following year Michelangeli became one of the earliest Western soloists to appear regularly across Asia.
Health difficulties and a deepening reluctance to appear in public reduced his concert schedule sharply during the 1970s and 1980s. While performing in Bordeaux in October 1988 he suffered an aortic aneurysm on stage, yet he returned to the platform the next season. His final public recital took place in 1990; five years later he succumbed to the longstanding ailments that had troubled him since childhood.
Michelangeli viewed the concert pianist’s existence as unremitting work. His own regimen often required as many as ten hours of daily practice, and he advised students to continue only until pain in the fingers and shoulders made further effort impossible. He approached teaching with equal gravity, holding posts in Italy and elsewhere in Europe and counting Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini among those he instructed.
For many listeners his performances fused technical command with an uncommon depth of insight. That quality of restraint and detachment—intended to channel rather than diminish expressive force—appears in such recordings as Brahms’ Paganini Variations. His interpretations of Mozart, Haydn, and Scarlatti remain especially prized.
Michelangeli never fully accepted the role of star performer. He considered the excessive praise lavished on soloists a distortion that pulled them away from their central responsibility. A reserved individual, he frequently altered facts when speaking with journalists, leaving scholars with an incomplete record; he continues to be remembered as a compelling yet elusive presence.
