Biography
Nelson Freire stood out among the most respected pianists of his era, appearing regularly with foremost orchestras and conductors in celebrated recital venues while joining forces with distinguished violinists, cellists, and other keyboard artists. He also produced an extensive discography covering broad repertoire for several leading companies, among them Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, and Decca; the last of these issued his collection of encores in 2019.
He entered the world on October 8, 1944, in Boa Esperança, Brazil, displaying remarkable early gifts by beginning lessons with his older sister at three and delivering his first public recital at five, when he performed Mozart’s Sonata in A major, K. 331. His earliest influential teachers were Nise Obino and Lucia Branco. At twelve he captured first prize in the Rio de Janeiro International Piano Competition of 1957, presenting, among other demanding works, Beethoven’s Concerto No. 5, the “Emperor,” before a jury that included Lili Kraus, Marguerite Long, Guiomar Novaes, and additional noted pianists. Scholarship funds from that victory enabled him to continue studies with Bruno Seidlhofer in Vienna. In 1959 he embarked on an international career, touring Europe, South America, and East Asia and collaborating with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors.
Still seeking further distinction, Freire entered the Lisbon-based Vianna da Motta International Piano Competition in 1964 and secured the top award. He made his London debut in 1968 and his American debut in 1970, performing Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto with the New York Philharmonic under Rudolf Kempe, a conductor with whom he later undertook several successful tours, most often with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
By the 1970s Freire had become a sought-after recording artist whose Chopin interpretations drew particular critical praise. He subsequently explored piano-duo repertoire, frequently appearing and recording with Martha Argerich. Their first joint release, containing Rachmaninov’s Suite No. 2, Op. 17, and Lutoslawski’s Variations on a Theme of Paganini, appeared on Philips in 1982. Over the following two decades they issued further recordings of works by Bartók, Ravel, and others. Freire also collaborated with violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Mischa Maisky, remaining active into the new century both as soloist and duo partner. In 2005 he earned critical acclaim at the BBC Proms in London, in Tokyo, and on tour with Riccardo Chailly and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester. Later recordings included Chopin Adagios (2008), a Debussy album (2009), and Harmonies du Soir, devoted to an all-Liszt program. He released another album of encores on Decca in 2019. Freire died in Rio de Janeiro on November 1, 2021, at the age of seventy-seven.
