Biography
Steven Osborne maintains a steady presence at the Proms, whether performing as soloist or accompanist, while also traveling globally for concerto engagements and solo recitals. His achievements include victories in international competitions along with multiple recording honors, and his programs encompass a broad spectrum of music with particular attention to works from his Scottish homeland.
Born in Edinburgh on March 12, 1971, to a father who served as a church organist, Osborne began lessons with Richard Beauchamp before finishing his training under Renna Kellaway at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Recognition arrived in 1991 when he captured first prize at the Clara Haskil International Competition in Vevey, Switzerland, an accomplishment that generated numerous bookings; by 1997, however, many of those opportunities had already been completed, prompting his next major step with the Naumburg Foundation Award in New York. That distinction strengthened his standing among emerging piano virtuosos, leading the following year to a contract with England’s Hyperion Records and an initial release featuring Alexander MacKenzie and Donald Tovey concertos in volume 19 of the Romantic Piano Concerto series.
Osborne has since performed across continents and added further Hyperion projects encompassing Messiaen—whose 2002 account of Vingt regards sur l'enfant-Jésus drew particular notice—alongside Debussy, Alkan, Schnittke, Liszt, and Nikolai Kapustin. Onstage he also presents piano music by Michael Tippett, Bartók, and Mozart. He returns to the Proms nearly every year and maintains an equally regular role at Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival. His discs have secured significant accolades both at home, including Gramophone Awards for the 2009 Britten Piano Concerto and the 2013 Mussorgsky-Prokofiev pairing, and abroad, where he has collected several German Schallplattenpreis prizes.
As a dedicated chamber musician, Osborne has partnered with Alban Gerhardt, Paul Lewis, and Alina Ibragimova. Balancing core repertoire and newer works, he focused on Beethoven in 2016 with a disc of three late sonatas that included the demanding Piano Sonata No. 29 in B flat major, Op. 106 (“Hammerklavier”), revealing strong technical command. In 2020 he released Prokofiev’s War Sonatas as his 30th Hyperion album, remained active through the COVID-19 period, and in 2023 brought out a collection of Debussy’s late piano pieces on the same label; by then his recorded output had reached roughly 40 titles.
