Biography
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has earned widespread recognition across an unusually broad range of repertoires, above all through his complete recorded cycles of Haydn, Debussy, Ravel, Bartók, and Prokofiev. Appearances and recordings with orchestras and conductors on several continents have brought him consistent critical acclaim.
Born in Lannion, France, on October 17, 1962, Bavouzet trained at the Paris Conservatory under Pierre Sancan. His first major prize arrived in 1986 with victory at the Beethoven International Competition in Cologne; three years later he received the Steven de Groote Memorial Award for the finest chamber-music performance at the Van Cliburn Competition. Although those successes led to engagements such as his appearance on a 1993 Accord recording of Stockhausen works, his decisive breakthrough occurred in 1995 when Georg Solti invited him to debut with the Orchestre de Paris. A 1998 concert with the same orchestra introduced a collaboration with Pierre Boulez that continued in numerous performances both in France and abroad. Bavouzet has since appeared throughout Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Asia, working with conductors including Gergiev, Ashkenazy, Boulez, and Gianandrea Noseda.
Recording activity has sustained his rising profile. In 2003 he released the complete piano music of Ravel for MDG to strong praise; his first Chandos project, the complete Debussy piano works, followed in 2006 and met with similarly favorable notices. A cycle of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas was begun in 2008, its initial volume appearing in 2012. In 2009 Bavouzet presented all five Prokofiev piano concertos in two concerts with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under Antoni Wit. That same year he gave the premiere of Bruno Mantovani’s piano concerto The Book of Jeb, written for him, at the Piano aux Jacobins International Festival in Toulouse. His repertoire also encompasses selected works by Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and Pierné. The first installment of a complete Haydn sonata cycle was issued in 2010; a parallel survey of Mozart concertos began in 2016, reaching its fifth volume in 2020. The tenth volume of the Haydn series appeared in 2022.
His discs have received awards from Gramophone and BBC Music magazines as well as the Diapason d’Or and the Choc de l’année.
