Biography
Stephen Hough maintains an extensive and exploratory catalog as a pianist, encompassing both standard repertoire and lesser-known scores alongside his original compositions. He participates eagerly in chamber ensembles, contributes written work across multiple genres, and displays his visual art in exhibitions.
Born in Heswall within Merseyside and raised in the nearby town of Thelwall, Hough began piano studies at age five after persuading his parents to purchase an instrument from a secondhand dealer. His father, an Australian-born representative for a steel firm, inspired Hough to obtain Australian citizenship in 2005. Rapid advancement followed until a mugging at age twelve prompted a one-year hiatus. After completing studies at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, Hough reached the finals of the 1978 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and later pursued a master’s degree at New York’s Juilliard School. His 1983 victory in the Naumburg International Piano Competition established his professional trajectory.
Hough’s broad performance experience includes advocacy for infrequently programmed figures such as Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Federico Mompou, and York Bowen, alongside core eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature. He regularly incorporates his own music, more than thirty published works that extend beyond solo piano; members of the Berlin Philharmonic gave the premiere of his Trio for piccolo, contrabassoon, and piano (“Was mit den Tränen geschieht”) in 2009. Recognized as an award-winning poet and newspaper columnist, Hough has also written on unconventional topics including perfume, while his paintings appeared at London’s Broadbent Gallery in 2012.
His discography, begun in the late 1980s and exceeding sixty releases, features both canonical pieces and rare historical works, together with contemporary scores such as those by Lowell Liebermann. Thematic projects include the 1998 recital New York Variations, which Time magazine named Classical Album of the Year. Since the mid-1990s, most recordings have appeared on the Hyperion label, among them complete cycles of the Beethoven and Saint-Saëns piano concertos. In 2021 he issued the recital Vida breve, containing music by Bach, Chopin, and Liszt as well as his own sonata of that name.
Hough received the first MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” awarded to a classical pianist in 2001 and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2014. He has held teaching positions at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and the Juilliard School in New York.
