Biography
Having trained across multiple countries, pianist Yevgeny Sudbin interprets Baroque keyboard literature together with Romantic scores from both Russia and Western Europe. Among the foremost keyboard artists to surface from post-Soviet Russia, he maintains an active international career.
Sudbin entered the world on April 19, 1980, in Leningrad, USSR—today St. Petersburg, Russia. Displaying precocious ability, he received instruction at the Leningrad Conservatory during childhood. At age ten his family relocated to Berlin, Germany, where he enrolled at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. In 1997 he settled in London, his home ever since, attending first the Purcell School and subsequently the Royal Academy of Music; Christopher Elton served as his principal instructor at both institutions. Additional guidance came from Murray Perahia, Stephen Hough, and Leon Fleisher. His first BIS recording, devoted to Scarlatti keyboard sonatas, appeared in 2005. He has remained an exclusive BIS artist—the label’s sole contract performer—and gave his initial BBC Proms performance in 2008, returning on numerous occasions thereafter.
That debut release already signaled the breadth of Sudbin’s programming. Unlike many Russian pianists living abroad who concentrate on virtuoso Russian works, he regularly explores Western European repertory extending from Scarlatti through Ravel. When he turns to Russian composers, he often bypasses familiar staples in favor of figures such as Nikolai Medtner and Mieczyslaw Weinberg, although his Rachmaninov interpretations have earned particular acclaim. Appearances as soloist encompass leading orchestras that include the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the Czech Philharmonic. European tours have been extensive; he has performed repeatedly in the United States, making his New York debut at the Frick Collection, and has also appeared in Brazil. An avid chamber musician, he has recorded the Schumann and Brahms piano quintets among other works. By 2023, when he released an album of Tchaikovsky ballet music transcribed for piano with his daughter Bella Sudbin, his BIS discography exceeded twenty-five titles.
