Friedrich Gulda

One of Austria's foremost pianists, Friedrich Gulda distinguished himself equally as a classical and jazz composer and performer. Vienna provided the setting for his birth in 1930, and piano instruction began for him at age seven. Enrollment at the Vienna Music Academy followed when he reached twelve, and he captured first prize at the Geneva International Music Festival four years afterward. European and South American engagements in 1949 brought widespread recognition for his interpretations of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, while a Carnegie Hall debut the next year confirmed his rising stature. Jazz claimed greater attention from 1951 onward, sparked when he joined Dizzy Gillespie for an impromptu set after appearing with the Chicago Symphony. His initial American jazz presentation took place at Birdland in New York City in 1956 and was soon followed by a Newport Jazz Festival appearance. Gulda subsequently assembled the Eurojazz Orchestra, whose repertoire blended jazz and classical sources within both small-group and large-ensemble formats. Ten years after the Birdland concert he launched a modern jazz competition in his hometown of Vienna. The Vienna Academy bestowed its Beethoven Ring upon him in 1970, yet he returned the honor in protest against what he viewed as an overly rigid educational structure, thereby strengthening his image as an eccentric figure. That perception grew further when he canceled major engagements without notice on multiple occasions. In 1988 objections to the inclusion of jazz musician Joe Zawinul in a Salzburg music festival program prompted one such withdrawal, and another was staged days before a planned Mozart recital through the release of a fabricated obituary. Friedrich Gulda died of an apparent heart attack at his Weissenbach residence on January 27, 2000.
