Born in Castlemaine, Victoria, during 2002 to a pair of musicians, Kian Maxwell Bytyci Brownfield discovered music early, receiving his first guitar at age seven and beginning to compose by his preteen years. As the Australian singer-songwriter KIAN, he merges yearning acoustic pop with dreamy hip-hop textures, entering the recording industry in his mid-teens via two rap collaborations before reaching the national singles chart in 2018 with the pop ballad “Waiting.”
His earliest breakthrough arrived through a featured appearance on rapper Baker Boy’s 2017 single “Cloud9,” which KIAN co-wrote. February 2018 saw the release of his own first track, “Too Far Gone,” a duet with fellow 15-year-old Vince the Kid. Later that year he claimed the annual Triple J Unearthed High prize, a nationwide contest for high school-aged artists, and issued his solo debut single “Waiting,” which rose to number 15 on the ARIA singles chart. Early 2019 brought the follow-up “Childism.”
