Atlanta native Killer Mike has built a career as a rapper, actor, and outspoken social activist whose lyrics, speeches, and interviews regularly confront police brutality along with systemic racism. After first reaching audiences through his ties to OutKast, he stepped out on his own with the Billboard Top Ten-charting Monster in 2003. Establishing the Grind Time Official imprint, he issued the I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind series plus a run of underground mixtapes while steadily accumulating acting credits. Widely praised as a breakthrough, his 2012 album R.A.P. Music paved the way for the duo Run the Jewels, launched alongside the record’s producer El-P. Pairing politically charged yet wryly humorous rhymes with hard-hitting, experimental beats, the pair quickly became known for their raucous live shows and a string of critically lauded albums whose commercial success kept climbing, culminating in RTJ4 reaching the Billboard 200 Top Ten in 2020. Mike also drew notice for his vocal endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders across the 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns. Returning as a solo artist after more than a decade, Michael arrived in 2023 and earned the rapper three Grammy awards.

Raised in Atlanta’s Adamsville neighborhood, Michael Render discovered hip-hop young and began competing in rap battles under the name Killer Mike. Following high-school graduation he briefly enrolled in college, where he met CeeLo Green of Goodie Mob and future members of the production crew the Beat Bullies; those connections eventually brought him to the attention of OutKast’s Big Boi. Render appeared on the Stankonia track “Snappin’ & Trappin’” as well as the playful 2001 single “The Whole World,” which captured the 2002 Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. As part of the second-generation Dungeon Family he featured on the collective’s 2001 release Even in Darkness and added guest verses for Slimm Calhoun, Jay-Z, Bone Crusher, and a remix of No Doubt’s “Hey Baby.” His Columbia debut Monster surfaced in 2003, showcasing Big Boi and Sleepy Brown on the hit “A.D.I.D.A.S.” while T.I., Bun B, and D12’s Bizarre also contributed. Render joined Big Boi’s short-lived Purple Ribbon All-Stars for both of the group’s projects, then dropped the 2006 mixtape The Killer before inaugurating Grind Time Official with I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind. Around the same period he began a sustained partnership with Adult Swim, voicing characters on Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Frisky Dingo.

Originally slated as his follow-up to Monster, the 2008 mixtape Ghetto Extraordinary finally surfaced after delays stemming from disagreements with Big Boi and Sony. I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II arrived the same year and, unlike its predecessor, registered on the Billboard 200. Mike curated the 2009 Grind Time Official compilation Underground Atlanta, drawing contributions from Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, B.o.B., and additional artists. Adult Swim issued the Flying Lotus-produced “Swimming” in 2010, and the track later appeared on 2011’s PL3DGE, released via T.I.’s Grand Hustle imprint. That project marked an uptick in politically informed content, an emphasis Mike extended on 2012’s R.A.P. Music, recorded entirely with Definitive Jux founder El-P and issued through the Adult Swim-affiliated Williams Street Records. The album earned major critical acclaim, cracked the upper half of the Billboard 200, and, after the pair toured together, led directly to the formation of Run the Jewels. Fool’s Gold put out the duo’s self-titled debut in 2013, whose bold lyricism and dense production drew comparable praise.

Mass Appeal, co-founded by Nas, released Run the Jewels 2 in 2014, featuring guests including Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha, blink-182’s Travis Barker, and former Three 6 Mafia rapper Gangsta Boo. Another critical triumph, the set was named Album of the Year by Pitchfork and landed on numerous additional year-end lists. The fan-funded Meow the Jewels, which reworked Run the Jewels 2 tracks with added cat sounds, appeared in 2015. That same year Killer Mike publicly backed presidential candidate Bernie Sanders; the two conducted video interviews, and Mike introduced Sanders and spoke at rallies, while Sanders in turn presented RTJ at their 2016 Coachella set. Run the Jewels 3 was self-released, first dropping digitally on Christmas Eve 2016 ahead of its physical edition in early 2017. Guests such as Kamasi Washington, Danny Brown, and Trina appeared, and the album topped Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

In 2017 Mike took roles in the film Baby Driver and the animated series South Park. He later filmed the documentary series Trigger Warning with Killer Mike, which premiered in early 2019. RTJ contributed to tracks by DJ Shadow, Danny Brown, Lorde, and others. RTJ4 arrived in June 2020, two days ahead of its originally planned date and amid widespread protests against police brutality, a theme addressed in the album’s lyrics. Guests included Pharrell Williams, Mavis Staples, 2 Chainz, and DJ Premier. The project debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 and was named Album of the Year by NME among numerous other honors. Killer Mike issued the single “Run,” featuring Young Thug, in 2022—his first top-billed release in ten years. Michael followed in 2023, with El-P and thankugoodsir appearing on the single “Don’t Let the Devil.” The album won Best Rap Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, while the track “Scientists & Engineers,” featuring André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, took Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.
