Sa-Roc

Rapper Sa-Roc built a reputation in independent hip-hop during the 2010s through technically demanding flows, lyrics grounded in social awareness, and polished beats across multiple projects. After issuing her own mixtapes, she joined the Rhymesayers roster, which issued her debut studio album, The Sharecropper's Daughter, in 2020.

Born Assata Perkins in Washington, D.C., at the close of 1981, she engaged with music and activism while still young and began rapping by 2002. Around that time she left college, departed D.C., and settled in Atlanta, where the local music community drew her in. Her initial recordings appeared in 2008 with the debut EP Astral Chronicles and the mixtape Supernova. She formed a working partnership with DJ and producer Sol Messiah, whose contributions supported a steady stream of output throughout the following decade.

Her writing merged commentary on society with reflections drawn from personal hardship. As her body of work grew through releases such as the 2011 project Ether Warz, the 2014 album Nebuchadnezzar, and the 2015 mixtape The Legend of Black Moses, both her songwriting and delivery sharpened. After signing with Rhymesayers in 2016 she concentrated on individual tracks that surfaced regularly over subsequent years. Tracks including the 2018 single "Forever" attracted wider attention, and she appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series, introducing her brand of conscious hip-hop to additional audiences. Those developments preceded the October 2020 arrival of her first Rhymesayers studio album, The Sharecropper's Daughter.
