Having crafted lyrics centered on social awareness and community uplift through narratives drawn from street life, the Inglewood, California native D Smoke achieved mainstream visibility in 2019 as the inaugural champion of the rap reality series Rhythm + Flow. By then the bilingual multi-instrumentalist proficient on guitar, drums, and piano had already logged more than ten years in the industry, operating as a songwriter and an underground artist shaped equally by West Coast forebears Kurupt and Snoop Dogg and by gospel vocalists Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams. While forging connections across musical styles and between Black and Latinx audiences, D Smoke also taught Spanish and music theory for several years at his alma mater, Inglewood High School. Shortly after his Rhythm + Flow triumph he delivered his first official album, the Grammy-nominated Black Habits, in 2020, followed by the star-studded War & Wonders in 2021.

Born Daniel Anthony Farris, the California rapper was raised in a musically immersed household that included an uncle who performed bass for Prince. His mother, gospel singer Jackie Gouche-Farris, provided backing vocals for Michael Jackson and Anita Baker, and his brothers Davion Farris and SiR pursued careers in R&B. With family at the center of his work, Farris established the songwriting collective WoodWorks in the early 2000s alongside his brothers and cousin Tiffany Gouche; the team supplied material for Ginuwine and the Pussycat Dolls. Concurrently he issued independent projects under the name Supa Good D Smoke and guested on SiR’s 2015 album Seven Sundays. Beyond recording, Farris dedicated himself to local youth through mentorship and counseling while instructing Spanish and music theory at Inglewood High School, from which he had graduated prior to attending UCLA.

Transitioning from classroom duties to national television, D Smoke auditioned for Rhythm + Flow in 2019 and advanced to the finals with Londynn B, Troyman, and Flawless Real Talk. Tracks such as “Last Supper” and “Let Migo” offered unvarnished portrayals of Inglewood existence delivered in both English and Spanish, earning approval from judges and viewers alike and securing him the competition’s top honor. Immediately afterward he issued the EP Inglewood High, which entered the Top Ten of Billboard’s Rap Albums chart. Later that year came his proper debut full-length, Black Habits, featuring Snoop Dogg, Jill Scott, his mother, and his brothers; the project climbed to number 25 on the Independent Albums chart and earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best New Artist. The following year he released his Billboard-charting second album, War & Wonders, which included contributions from Ty Dolla $ign, Marsha Ambrosius, Dem Jointz, Tobe Nwigwe, BJ the Chicago Kid, Fireboy DML, Westside Boogie, and John Legend.
