The Kin originated in New York City during 2001 when Australian siblings Isaac and Thorry Koren assembled an acoustic duo. Their sound fuses the melodic drive of '90s Brit-pop with soul-infused alternative rock and introspective hooks crafted for radio, a combination that built a loyal audience for the brothers across the entire Eastern Seaboard. Growing up in Adelaide inside a household that encouraged music, the pair began formal study of jazz and vocal methods at age ten and wrote their earliest joint composition while still in their late teens. Once they moved to the Big Apple, the Koren brothers recruited additional players to expand their ambitious arrangements, ultimately relying on a changing lineup that included drummers, keyboardists, and bassists. Tracing appeared as their first album in 2004, with Red and Black arriving the next year, Live at the Pussy Cat following in 2006, and Rise and Fall issued in 2007. The group entered a deal with Interscope in 2011 and started recording the successor to Rise and Fall.
