Knutsen & Ludvigsen

A Norwegian children's music pair revered in cult circles, Knutsen & Ludvigsen concentrated their efforts throughout the 1970s and into the middle of the following decade, attaining their commercial summit in 1983 via the prize-winning release Juba Juba. Following the millennium, the act experienced renewed visibility through multiple reunion shows. Formed by the songwriting team of Øystein Dolmen and Gustav Lorentzen, the duo issued its first self-titled album in 1970. Their sophomore effort, Knutsen og Ludvigsen: Brunost No Igjæn? (1972), earned a Spellemannprisen for Best Children's Music. The next studio set, Knutsen og Ludvigsen Nr. 3: Tut (1974), coincided with a cinematic comedy of the same name that featured the pair in starring roles. Two additional LPs, Ned Med Nidaros (1975) and Du Milde Mosart! (1976), appeared before an extended absence from new recordings that lasted through the rest of the 1970s. Activity resumed modestly in the early to mid-1980s with Fiskepudding! Lakrisbåter! (1980), the chart-topping Juba Juba (1983), and the career-spanning Knutsen & Ludvigsen Samleplate (1984); the 1983 album secured a second Spellemannprisen, reached number three on the Norwegian albums chart, and inspired a stage production. From the mid-1980s the duo remained largely inactive. A pair of mid-1990s compilations, Knutsen & Ludvigsens Beste (1996) and Knutsen & Ludvigsens Ver'ste' (1997), rekindled public interest, with the former climbing into the Norwegian Top Five. Beginning in 2004, Knutsen & Ludvigsen staged a series of comeback concerts that reinforced their enduring appeal among Norwegian listeners now in their thirties and forties who first encountered tracks such as "Grevling I Taket," "Hallo! Hallo!," and "Dum Og Deilig." Issued after these performances, the 2008 anthology Dum og Deilig: Knutsen & Ludvigsens Beste entered the Top Ten.
