Biography
Athens, Georgia multi-instrumentalist Hank Sullivant helped launch indie outfit the Whigs as one of its original members and gained local recognition for his production work before channeling his efforts into Kuroma, the vehicle for his own psychedelic, hook-driven pop. Kuroma’s earliest release arrived as the 2007 debut Paris, assembled in the studio alongside childhood friend James Richardson along with numerous additional players and engineers. Soon after completing that record, MGMT recruited Sullivant as touring guitarist, a role that shifted him to New York and consumed roughly a year of his schedule. Upon returning to Athens, the project explored performance-art presentations and assorted road dates while shaping its follow-up. The resulting double album Psychopomp appeared in 2010, elevating the band’s visibility through a Bonaroo festival slot plus support dates alongside MGMT and Tame Impala. By 2013 the core had coalesced around Sullivant and Richardson, augmented by Simon O’Connor and William Berman for both stage appearances and studio work. Third album Kuromarama reached listeners in April 2015. Sullivant drew on his conversion to Catholicism while shaping the next release, 2016’s Dark Horse Rides Again.
