Biography
Laura Love has earned considerable recognition throughout the Northwest music community over recent years for her exceptional abilities as a singer, bass player, and composer. Her approach blends urban funk grooves with a folk-oriented perspective. Assigning a precise genre to her work poses challenges, as suggestions like folk/funk, African/Appalachian, and House/Celtic have circulated widely. Regardless of terminology, her compositions stand out as innovative, excellent, and grounded in established musical heritage.
While capable of drawing crowds independently, she has served as an opener for John Lee Hooker, Lyle Lovett, Bo Diddley, Karla Bonoff, and Elayne Boosler, in addition to appearances at various folk and eclectic festivals.
Laura Love entered the world in Lincoln, Nebraska, and launched her professional journey at sixteen by performing jazz and pop standards inside the Nebraska State Penitentiary. Her path has included stints with a blues-grunge group, as well as in duo and trio formats, plus membership in the humorous feminist quartet Venus Envy. On her personal imprint Octoroon Biography, she issued Menstrual Hut in 1989, Z Therapy in 1990, and Pangaea in 1993. Shum Ticky came next during 1998, followed by Fourteen Days in 2000 via Zoe Records.
