Lea Freire, a multi-instrumentalist, first appeared within Brazil’s jazz scene toward the end of the 1990s. Her initial record, Ninhal, came out during 1998. During that period, she joined forces with Teco Cardoso for the live Quinteto album. Freire established her independent label, Maritaca, in 2001, through which she put out recordings from Silvia Goes and Tibo Delor.

Among her various musical partnerships are those with Nelson Ayres, Arismar do Espirito Santo, Elton Medeiros, and Lillian Carmona. In addition to her performance work, Freire has instructed students in composition and instrumentation at the Zimbo Trio Music School. She currently holds a teaching position at the esteemed Souza Lima Conservatory in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
