Biography
Lebo Sekgobela, a South African gospel vocalist, infuses her contemporary choir music with a notably soulful and poignant vocal style. Her initial full-length release, Ithemba Lami, appeared in 2013, yet the double-platinum third album Restored from 2016 marked her major breakthrough.
Sekgobela entered the world in Gauteng’s Vaal Area during the early 1980s and began singing professionally as a backup vocalist alongside artists such as Vicky Vilakazi and William Sejake of Joyous Celebration. Tox Music issued her debut solo project, Ithemba Lami, during the middle of 2013, with the live album By His Grace following later that year. The By His Grace track “Melsui” gained traction through television placements and substantial radio airplay. Subsequent guest spots on the Anointed Worship release A Time of Anointed Worship and the compilation Mzansi Gospel Hits paved the way for her third long-player, Restored, in 2016. Her popular take on Matsetse Matthews’ “Lion of Judah” elevated her to widespread recognition across South Africa and Nigeria, where the song registered on radio charts.
The additional live set Umusa surfaced in 2018. In 2019 Sekgobela delivered her fifth album, Hymns and Worship, and appeared on Rebecca Malope’s Lord You Are Good.
