Alexander Addicus and Rupert J. Lloyd channeled their distorted takes on ambient breakbeat, dub, and trip-hop into sampling experiments across a series of eccentric pseudonyms, among them Zeuxis & the Painted Grapes, Empirical Sleeping Consort, Alkahest, and, most frequently, Legion of Green Men. From their base in the subdued city of Burlington, Ontario, the pair established Post Contemporary as their own imprint during the early '90s and assembled a production collective they called Incarnate. The 1994 Legion of Green Men outings—the single "Midnight Genius" together with the first album Spatial Specific—brought Addicus and Lloyd domestic notice and secured a distribution arrangement via fellow Canadian Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 label. Virgin Canada subsequently arranged an international edition of the album. By then the duo had already launched their dub project Zeuxis & the Painted Grapes, issuing the 1995 LP Mystic Songs from the Sanitorium on Post Contemporary. Additional EPs appeared under the Incarnate and Alkahest names before the long-delayed second Legion of Green Men full-length, Floating in Shallow Water, arrived in 1999.
