Biography
Jochem Paap, who records as Speedy J, operates out of Rotterdam and shapes techno through a refined fusion of tuneful electro-pop and a tougher, Detroit-driven intensity that ranks among the most acclaimed examples of European techno after the rave era. Serving as the Netherlands connection to Richie “Plastikman” Hawtin’s Plus 8 imprint, Paap first built recognition as a club DJ whose stage name nods to his skill on the decks, yet in 1997 he chose to scale back those bookings in order to concentrate on studio work. His opening full-length, Ginger, arrived in 1993 and merged atmospheric layers with sharp, forceful rhythms, quickly earning the “intelligent dance music” label after two of its pieces appeared on the inaugural installment of Warp’s Artificial Intelligence compilation series. Under the Speedy J alias he has issued further albums including G-Spot, Public Energy No. 1 and A Shocking Hobby, alongside a pair of ambient-oriented solo releases for the Fax label issued as Vrs-Mbnt-Pcs 9598. Additional tracks have surfaced under the Public Energy name on Plus 8 and on his own Beam Me Up! imprint, which he shuttered in 1996. Paap helped establish a Dutch remix collective aimed at linking local electronic artists for joint ventures, and prior to stepping away from regular DJ appearances he was noted for championing experimental, dance-rooted electronics to broader crowds through performances alongside unexpected collaborators such as Cypress Hill and Henry Rollins. He has also supplied remixes for Secret Cinema and Sven Väth.
