Biography
Croydon-born producer and DJ James Ruskin ranks among the most respected figures in British techno, recognized both for operating the Blueprint label and for his own recordings, which draw equally from the no-nonsense drive of the Birmingham sound and the adventurous sound design of Autechre. Since Blueprint’s founding in the mid-’90s he has maintained a steady stream of quality material on the imprint while also placing several full-lengths and EPs with the German institution Tresor, among them the 2001 album Into Submission. In addition to joint releases with Surgeon and Oliver Ho, Ruskin has partnered with Regis (Karl O’Connor) under the name O/V/R and has explored more experimental, IDM-leaning terrain with Mark Broom in the Fear Ratio.
He first took up DJing in 1991 and began producing two years later, initially alongside studio partner Richard Polson. The pair issued their debut 12" as Void in 1995, launched Blueprint the following year, and began releasing music as Outline, thereby establishing the label’s hard, uncompromising techno aesthetic. Ruskin started appearing under his own name in 1997; his debut album, Further Design, appeared on Blueprint in 1998. Tresor then issued his next two full-lengths, Point 2 (2000) and Into Submission (2001), while he continued to put out EPs on Blueprint and Coda. Following Polson’s death from natural causes, Ruskin and Blueprint entered a short hiatus in 2006, returning in 2008 with the fourth album The Dash on Tresor. He formed O/V/R with Sandwell District/Downwards co-founder Karl O’Connor, releasing the debut Interior in 2009; the project’s 2010 EP Post-Traumatic Son had its title track remixed by Robert Hood, Marcel Dettmann, and others.
From 2010 onward Ruskin issued several techno EPs with Mark Broom, and the two also launched the more abstract, fractured project the Fear Ratio, whose first album, Light Box, arrived in 2011. Their second album, Refuge of a Twisted Soul, came out on Skam in 2015, followed by Live E.P. in 2018. After five years without a solo release, Ruskin resurfaced in 2019 with Reality Broadcast Off on Blueprint and Siklikal on Tresor, then opened 2020 with the Blueprint single Consumer Patterns.
