Biography
Berlin-based French artist David Letellier, performing as Kangding Ray, constructs meticulously detailed electronic works that balance experimental sonic architecture with forceful physical presence. His initial output leaned toward fragmented, exploratory albums, beginning with the 2006 release Stabil, before he moved toward floor-focused extended plays such as the 2010 record Pruitt Igoe and more thematically driven full-lengths like Cory Arcane in 2015.
Prior to concentrating on studio electronics, Letellier performed live as a guitarist and drummer in conventional groups. Raster-Noton issued his first album, Stabil, in 2006, presenting a precise, glitch-driven collection that wove together live instrumentation with looped and processed fragments. The 2008 follow-up Automne Fold shifted toward stronger melodic frameworks, offering an approachable entry point to the label’s typically demanding catalog. Pruitt Igoe arrived in 2010 and included reinterpretations by Alva Noto and Ben Frost; the EP molded jagged, abrasive beats into patterns with greater dancefloor viability. The 2011 album OR merged propulsive club rhythms with stark, post-industrial textures in equal measure.
In 2012 Kangding Ray issued material on the Berlin label Stroboscopic Artefacts, including the intense Monad XI EP and a split 12-inch alongside Pfirter, while Raster-Noton released the more streamlined techno outing The Pentaki Slopes. Stroboscopic Artefacts followed with the 2013 EP Tempered Inmid. Solens Arc, his fourth album and a wide-ranging collection, appeared on Raster-Noton in 2014. Cory Arcane surfaced the next year, presenting a polished sequence whose narrative follows a ballet dancer fixated on technology as she faces personal dissolution. A split single with Rrose came out on Stroboscopic Artefacts in 2016, and the same imprint delivered the dystopian techno album Hyper Opal Mantis in 2017. Letellier inaugurated his own ara label in 2019 with the Predawn Qualia EP.
