Biography
Robert Henke produces music under his own name after achieving wider recognition as half of Monolake, the minimal techno duo tied to Berlin’s Chain Reaction label. Although that partnership has earned him greater visibility, his most refined and carefully considered output has surfaced under his own name on the Imbalance Computer Music imprint he runs. Largely setting aside Monolake’s rhythmic drive, the solo albums Piercing Music and Floating.Point instead explore the communicative power of entirely digital sound fields, merging surging FM synthesis layers with delicate clicks, buzzes, drones, and slender strands of computer-generated noise. These pieces sit near the more specialized creations of academic composers Francois Bayle, John Chowning, and Bernard Parmegiani, figures Henke himself cites as central influences; they blend the textural approaches of electro-acoustic and acousmatic traditions with the calmer moods found in ambient and experimental post-techno, placing the work alongside that of Terre Thaemlitz, Kim Cascone, and Oval.
