Biography
Yves Tumor navigates eerie ambient soundscapes, mind-bending soul, striking rock, and additional styles through a seamless, dreamlike progression, marking them as an unmatched musical shape-shifter. Foundations laid in experimentation via initial releases on imprints such as Dog Food proved advantageous for projects including the ethereal, passionate 2016 album Serpent Music, where R&B and psychedelic facets surfaced within its flowing reverie. A shift toward greater organization and directness appeared on the 2018 release Safe in the Hands of Love, shaped by Brit-pop alongside '90s alt-rock, while still resisting simple categorization. Introducing added precision and brevity to Heaven to a Tortured Mind in 2020 and Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) in 2023 served only to intensify the multifaceted unexpected elements throughout the music.
Sean Bowie, born and raised in Tennessee, acquired proficiency on multiple instruments during adolescence through self-directed practice. Bass came first at age 17, followed by acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and keyboard. After absorbing material from Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, and Led Zeppelin, Bowie turned to electronic music infused with substantial noise, achieved by recording straight into the computer's internal microphone.
Upon reaching age 20, Bowie relocated to California. Citing Throbbing Gristle as a primary influence, they integrated into Los Angeles' experimental music community. Post-chillwave output under the name Teams drew acclaim from online outlets, leading to collaborations with figures such as Star Slinger, James Ferraro, and Jónó Mí Ló. An encounter with experimental hip-hop artist Mykki Blanco occurred in 2012, followed by touring together and an association with her Dog Food label. After relocating to Europe, Bowie developed more introspective, spiritual work under the Yves Tumor moniker. The project first surfaced in 2015 via contributions to NON Worldwide Compilation, Vol. 1 and Mykki Blanco Presents C-ORE, plus the self-released full-length When Man Fails You, later issued on cassette in 2016 by Apothecary Compositions.
Serpent Music emerged the same year as an evocative assemblage shaped by the Motown and soul recordings Bowie's father played during their upbringing. Crafted over three years, the album appeared on Bill Kouligas' Pan label and received widespread critical praise.
Activity remained high for Tumor throughout 2017. In addition to supplying the track "Limerence" for Pan's Mono No Aware compilation, they issued the atmospheric Experiencing the Deposit of Faith independently online in September and joined the Warp roster. Before year's end, a remix of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "ZURE" saw release. The debut Warp album, Safe in the Hands of Love from September 2018, incorporated elements ranging from '90s alt-rock to noise. It included input from Oxhy, Puce Mary, and Croatian Armor, earning enthusiastic notices for its bold textures. Tumor also handled a remix of Alice Glass' "The Altar" that year, then delivered the 2019 single "Applaud" in partnership with Hirakish, Napolian, and ANTHEM.
Guitar-focused Heaven to a Tortured Mind arrived in April 2020, with co-producer Justin Raisen and vocalists Diana Gordon, Kelsey Lu, and Sunflower Bean's Julia Cumming. Integration of psych-rock and classic soul components into Tumor's approach yielded another critical success that featured on numerous year-end lists. Additional appearances that year included a spot on Joji's album Nectar, plus the single "let all the poisons that lurk in the mud seep out," which featured Lu, Kelly Moran, and Moses Boyd. Amid the COVID-19 global pandemic, Tumor stayed productive through pursuits such as furniture design alongside continued composition. The Asymptotical World EP surfaced in July 2021, spotlighting the single "Jackie." A remix of Willow's "Perfectly Not Close to Me" followed the next year, preceding the March 2023 full-length Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds). Crafted with producer Noah Goldstein and mixed by Alan Moulder, the record refined Tumor's songcraft while juxtaposing reflections on love, lust, faith, and fame against layered sounds drawing from post-punk, grunge, and nu-metal.
