Biography
Shygirl, born Blane Muise in South London, produces bold, high-impact pop tracks rooted in grime, post-industrial hip-hop, and experimental club sounds. Her rapid, plainspoken rhymes and typically level vocal delivery define her presence, while frequent partnerships with producer Sega Bodega, co-founder of the NUXXE label and collective, extend to SOPHIE, Arca, Zebra Katz, and additional collaborators. Key early releases encompass the 2019 single “BB” and the 2020 EP ALIAS, both widely praised. A shift toward melody surfaced on cuts such as “Firefly,” preceding her September 2022 debut album Nymph; by 2024 she had committed to straight dance material on Club Shy. That year also brought her first mix CD, Fabric Presents Shygirl.
She studied at the University of Bristol after growing up in South London. NUXXE was launched in 2016 alongside Sega Bodega and Coucou Chloe, coinciding with her opening single “Want More.” In 2017 she appeared on Sega Bodega’s “CC” and LYZZA’s Powerplay EP while issuing the two-track release MSRYNVR. Her 2018 debut EP Cruel Practice fused garage, grime, and experimental hip-hop and drew strong critical response. Three singles arrived in 2019, “BB” proving the most prominent. Further 2020 activity included guest spots on albums by Georgia, Zebra Katz, and Arca, plus a move to Because Music for the follow-up EP ALIAS; “FREAK” led the project, which featured production from SOPHIE, Sega Bodega, Kai Whiston, Happa, and others.
Cosha joined her on the 2021 single “Lapdance from Asia,” while slowthai featured on “BDE.” The cinematic “Cleo” appeared next, followed by its orchestral reworking “Cleo at Abbey Road.” “Bbycakes,” recorded with Mura Masa, Lil Uzi Vert, and PinkPantheress, surfaced in 2022. The yearning, U.K. garage-inflected “Firefly” preceded the September arrival of Nymph, her first full-length. A 2023 deluxe edition titled Nymph_o added reworked tracks featuring Björk, Tinashe, Sevdaliza, and Erika de Casier. Club Shy, a 2024 dance EP carrying contributions from Kingdom, Boys Noize, SG Lewis, and others, supplied three selections to Fabric Presents Shygirl, issued to mark the London club and label’s 25th anniversary.
