Biography
Born on April 5, 1940, in Dyess, Arkansas, Tommy Cash stood eight years behind his celebrated sibling Johnny Cash, known widely as the Man in Black, yet carved out his own measure of chart recognition. He assembled his initial group while still in high school, only to enlist in the Army shortly after receiving his diploma. Stationed in Germany in 1958, he worked as a DJ for Armed Services Radio, an experience that may have indirectly aided the remarkable popularity of Johnny’s single “Ballad of a Teenage Queen” that same year.
Returning to civilian life in the early 1960s, Tommy performed alongside Hank Williams, Jr. and secured a recording deal with Musicor by 1967. A subsequent shift to United Artists brought him close to the country Top 40 in 1968 via “The Sounds of Goodbye.” Signing next with Epic Records, he released his strongest success, the late-1969 single “Six White Horses,” a tribute to JFK, RFK, and Martin Luther King, Jr., which climbed to number four. Two additional Top Ten releases followed in 1970: “Rise and Shine” and “One Song Away.”
Throughout the 1970s Cash kept touring and cutting records for Epic, Elektra, 20th Century, and Monument, though his sole Top 20 placement came with “I Recall a Gypsy Woman,” which reached number 16 in 1973. Tommy Cash passed away on September 13, 2024, at the age of 84.
